Borsacchio Nature Reserve

The Borsacchio Nature Reserve is one of the most precious natural assets on the Abruzzo coast — a protected area of extraordinary beauty extending across roughly 1,100 hectares along the Roseto degli Abruzzi shoreline, between the estuaries of the Tordino and Vomano rivers. Established in 2005 as a Guided Nature Reserve by the Abruzzo Region, it represents the last stretch of unspoilt nature on the central-southern Adriatic coast.

A unique Adriatic ecosystem

The Reserve’s landscape encompasses a remarkable variety of habitats: coastal dunes with their pioneer vegetation (marram grass, sea campion, sea holly), a littoral pine forest of stone and maritime pine, reedbed wetlands, uncultivated meadows and hillside Mediterranean scrub. This mosaic of environments supports diverse wildlife: otters along the watercourses, foxes, hares and porcupines in the woods, and above all an impressive birdlife with over 150 recorded species, including grey heron, night heron, black-winged stilt, kingfisher and numerous raptors.

Nature trails

The Reserve is crossed by a network of well-marked trails allowing visitors to explore different zones without disturbing the ecosystems. The Dune Trail follows the coast through dune vegetation with spectacular views over the Adriatic. The River Route follows the Tordino estuary through wetlands teeming with life. The Forest Trail winds through the pine forest and Mediterranean scrub up to the first hilltops.

Activities and guided tours

The Reserve organises guided tours on foot, by bicycle and by kayak along the waterways. Birdwatching activities are particularly popular during migration seasons (April–May and September–October). The Visitor Centre offers educational programmes for schools and information on local biodiversity. Entry to the Reserve is free.
